Exitting Stealth Mode

Well, Luxtera, one of my employers, finally left stealth mode with an article in Forbes magazine. So, a lot of people ask what I’m up to these days. The quick answer is: I’m hacking silicon. I love moving down the technology chain to more and more fundamental items, and right now learning silicon and the properties of light is where it’s at. I spend the majority of my brain cycles these days on Luxtera, designing high speed (10 Gbps) broadband circuits, as well as precision low-speed analog circuits, data converters, and other things such as architecture and specification work. Basically, I design anything that needs to be designed to get the product out the door, whether its low or high level, fast or slow speed, integrated or discrete, board level or silicon level. Luxtera is a fun place for me, because it requires you to approach electronic design with the hacker’s attitude toward problem solving. I like that the company is broad yet vertical in many ways, so that I get my choice of the “right” medium to solve a problem. You see, there is this interesting confluence of optical and electrical technologies, and every day I get to tackle problems that nobody has ever seen before because this technology is so new. There are few rules, a lot of open road, and a lot of mountains to climb–oh, and great equipment and smart people to help you out. What more could a hacker ask for? :-)
