Nate Lawson (co-designer of the Blu-Ray content protection layer) had a nice presentation at RSA2007 comparing the content protection schemes used on the Commodore64 vs. the Xbox360. His slides are an interesting and fun read…kind of brings out a certain nostalgia, but then you realize that things aren’t all that different today.
wow — that takes me back! I spent a lot of time on those c=64 schemes ;)
thanks for the link…
Thanks, bunnie. I had fun giving the talk, including a demo of using a 1541 drive hooked up to a PC running an emulator. The systems today definitely are based on the knowledge gained in the 80’s.
We hope BD+ reflects what we’ve learned from the past and that we built a flexible system that can adapt to attacks. The next year should be very interesting.
Was this recorded? I would love to hear it from the horse’s mouth :)
Yes, but you have to pay the RSA conference to purchase it. I don’t know if I even get a copy even though it was my words. :)
Thanks! Always fun with a little culture. I have never played C64 and Xbox. :)
