Should be a cakewalk to guess, but I couldn’t resist posting this little piece of tech nostalgia after I stumbled upon it during my recent trip to the US.

    But not just any DEC Alpha CPU board, but a CPU board for an Alphaserver 1000A. 500MHz.

    (Method of figuring: all the DEC logos, all the edge contacts, the board part number :) )

    Even without looking it up, “Alpha CPU” came immediately to mind. The board part number on the center yellow sticker was kind of a dead giveaway, though. Someone wants $300 for one on eBay….

    I have an Aplha produced by Samsung. Same bolts for the heat sink – the heat sink immediately made me think ‘Alpha’. Pulled it from a NetApp filer.

    Same here with that distinctive bolted-on heatsink, which I recall from working at an Alpha VAR in the UK in 1997. The dates on the chips match that era, and the chips surrounding the CPU are static RAM, presumably for an external cache.

    I’ll confess I didn’t narrow down exactly which model of Alpha it was before coming here to check my guess…

    As others have said, it’s an Alpha. We have one of those in our server room. It has been replaced with a slightly more modern AlphaServer, but the old one is started with the flick of a switch.

    Oo, I’d recognize that heat sink anywhere. Haven’t seen that particular module, but I have fond memories of Alphas.
