Name that Ware September 2011

The Ware for September 2011 is shown below. Click on the image for a much larger version.

Should be a cakewalk to guess, but I couldn’t resist posting this little piece of tech nostalgia after I stumbled upon it during my recent trip to the US.

    Item #: 54-24799-03
    Reg. Price: $1,050.00
    Our Price: $1,015.00

(Now the question is can you realize the asking price for yours).

  3. Jonathan says:

But not just any DEC Alpha CPU board, but a CPU board for an Alphaserver 1000A. 500MHz.

(Method of figuring: all the DEC logos, all the edge contacts, the board part number :) )

  4. Chris says:

This one was too easy. Even I knew what it was…

  5. Nathan Williams says:

Even without looking it up, “Alpha CPU” came immediately to mind. The board part number on the center yellow sticker was kind of a dead giveaway, though. Someone wants $300 for one on eBay….

  6. J. Peterson says:

Those two lug nuts on the heat sink really give it away:

  7. 8 minutes from posting to the correct answer.

Alpha gear is too mainstream for this blog.

  8. Thomas says:

I have an Aplha produced by Samsung. Same bolts for the heat sink – the heat sink immediately made me think ‘Alpha’. Pulled it from a NetApp filer.

  9. Sanjay says:

    Dec Alpha board!

Am I first ? Am I first ?? Oh if I had only started browsing an hour earlier. :(

  10. Alex B says:

Same here with that distinctive bolted-on heatsink, which I recall from working at an Alpha VAR in the UK in 1997. The dates on the chips match that era, and the chips surrounding the CPU are static RAM, presumably for an external cache.

I’ll confess I didn’t narrow down exactly which model of Alpha it was before coming here to check my guess…

  11. Pontus says:

As others have said, it’s an Alpha. We have one of those in our server room. It has been replaced with a slightly more modern AlphaServer, but the old one is started with the flick of a switch.

Funny, I read about the creation of the alpha this morning:

It’s a recommended read. Also read the linked PDF about “Electric Vlasic”

  12. XTL says:

Oo, I’d recognize that heat sink anywhere. Haven’t seen that particular module, but I have fond memories of Alphas.
